DON'T
LET THEM BE LEFT BEHIND!
Hundreds of students in our area read and work
below grade level. Many come from difficult households, without the
support others have. They often have needs that could be met by teens
and adults spending time, helping and caring for them.
That's where your local Hope in Christ Compassionate
Ministry Center works, and where You Can Help these
students get ahead, not be left behind.
Gaston
Hope in Christ provides free tutoring to students Tuesday, Wednesday
and Thursday afternoon at Eastside Church of the Nazarene (3250 Redbud
Drive, on the hill between Ashbrook and Franklin Square/Lowell/McKinney
Chevrolet) We use volunteers to provide one-on-one and group tutoring
for the students who can't afford a private tutor or learning center's
fee. We use caring Christians to provide a spiritual, safe, fun
environment for students to learn & grow in. And we use love to
provide their greatest needs.
And it's working!
Our
students are improving their grades, and their testing scores. Families
are happy, teachers (who we work closely with) are happy, and the list
helped is growing.
BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP!
1. We need prayer. The
amazing stories of kid's lives come about because the Lord has called
us to this, and supplied our needs. To continue, we need friends to
lift up our kids, staff and efforts in prayer.
2. We need resources.
We resources and people from everywhere to keep costs down. But we need
assistance with snacks, supplies and materials. So we need "stuff" and
ongoing support.
3. We need caring volunteers.
Our tutors receive training and support, and help us 2 hours a day 1 to
3 days a week from 3 to 5. For each volunteer slot we fill, 2 more
students will have an adult helping them one on one with reading and
school work.
Our volunteers are special people. While we have no
requirements for students, we ask that our volunteers have an active
faith and are part of a local faith community. Our goal is not only to
help students with their work, but to help them learn about and grow
their faith in God.
So if you can do elementary math and science, and have a heart to love
others for God, please contact us about being a tutor!
4. We need leaders! The Gaston
Hope in Christ Board
is made up of volunteers from each church, leaders in the church or
community who can give 2 hours per month to help with oversight, policy
and serve as liaisons to their churches and community.
ABOUT GASTON
HOPE IN CHRIST
Gaston Hope in Christ is a ministry of local
churches set up to meet
the needs of communities in Gaston county and surrounding areas. We do
not duplicate services being met by others, and work with other
agencies to meet needs in our areas.
Hope in Christ afterschool tutoring program serves
30+ students from
10 schools over three days a week. Staff and volunteer tutors work with
the students to provide a fun, safe environment, nutritious snacks and
one-on-one help with homework, reading and other needs. Our volunteers
are trained and supported, and each work with 2-4 students per day,
while others play games, work on computers and other learning tools,
and special projects.
Since
2000 we have
helped over 300 students. Teachers, parents and students are all happy,
and each year we have a students waiting to be part of the program and
wanting us to expand those we serve
Volunteers who can care for 3rd- 5th students and
help them with
their homework, social skills and life are welcome to join us. We also
need financial, food and other contributions to help with three snack
times and a Wednesday dinner each week.
